Crap. So the client really is bonkers now? I was away for quite some time... mostly because I was feeling somewhat blue about the server. It felt like there really was no point in working on it anymore.

Maybe it is so for some people, but it isn't for others. I should finish updating that new client I was working on. It was just so much work :S But that's what happens when you do not update in a long time.

Sigh, well, I guess I should head back to fixing that client, because the one we had is so totally dead now :S

EDIT: Fruit, there are quite SOME things which I would have done better with GW2, but it's good enough that I don't mind and can still enjoy the game. Though, curiously enough, Lothar told me that you quit because your necromancer minion's AI was crap, which is weird because mine seemed just fine. At least they all fight as expected :S Anyway, that would be a derailing so perhaps it's best not to try to start a discussion about that.

thank you skot, may this server never die like my addiction to this one.... i've played it long time ago and i've never found any other server with this degree of custom changes that leave a good taste after playing ( well, maybe being asura'd by porings at lvl 1 is unforgettable and a little humiliating) but still and also now i have friends willing to join my crusade, to conquer this untamed land of never ending dificulty.

Spawns and respawn rates are not associated to the map population, Bomb. There is a recharge time of around 30 seconds before a defeated mob resurrects. If there were many, many players on a map, what would likely happen is that areas where the players are would start getting deserted (since mobs do not spawn on sight of players), and they would start gathering on unvisited areas.

Players would be forced to move around and look for these unvisited areas which likely would have gathered the majority of mobs, before they get again dispersed to unpopulated areas.

I think, in the long run, it would mean much more wandering before enemies show up. If you had players equally distributed all over the map so that no space is available without mobs on sight, then monsters just would be kept waiting to be spawned indefinitely: thus an empty map.

Of course, if the population ever reached that point, then I'd just allow mobs to spawn on sight of players after some ~10 tries to find an empty space.

EDIT: for @difficulty effects, there is a thing called "map difficulty," which is the result of the aggregate difficulties of all players in a map, and that would be used.
In hindsight, I would have preferred to use GW2's mechanic of scaling THE PLAYER rather than the monster, and difficulty would instead scale the player's level compared to that of the local monsters. I think players wouldn't really like this, though :S (unless there were some good rewards for being underleveled, but this could be abused by the party seeing how loot is not per-character, so it probably wouldn't work).

Well, the status is as follows:

The client is working.
The server compiles fine.

I am currently updating the item_db (because the old one throws a bunch of errors because of missing IDs).

And what still needs to be done is:
Verify the item_db to remove any headgears which cause the client to crash.
Fix any disconnects caused by the client sending packets which are not supported by the server.
Fix any other crashes I can find out.

I was hoping to actually finish this week, but today I got swamped with some paperwork for Canada, and I am exhausted... the story ain't over, so who knows. I really want to have an update working before the next weekend (Nov 9), though.

Well, I am not making any promises, so keep your fingers crossed :S

Meh, I can't even get to login to the server. The client is sending some kind of data which is totally unrecognized by the server. The login packet, despite the command being recognized, is actually throwing out a single digit instead of the username x_x

I am having problems figuring out what's wrong here. How annoying <_<;

Anyway, I made some progress. I managed to fix the client to send the appropriate packets. But now the client times out instead of displaying the character list :S

I wonder just how long I will have to struggle with this x_x;

EDIT: So now the client sends the right packets,and I get as far as selecting a character. Then it says connection rejected by server  despite the server not saying anything about it. This is annoying,  but still, progress!

actually you using the forum indicates that there's still life in here , also death is not the end, the server is not suffering, it's only dormant dream, waiting to be thought.

I came back crying after trying out a Vanilla RO for the old times' sake (and to play some 3rds), but I can't get used to the lack of Mouish features... and sadly MouRO still isn't working, or so considering what I read here.
